The best places in South Lombok we recommend for surfing
Selong Belanak
30 minutes west of Kuta | Beginner
A long, white-sand beach with soft rolling waves, Selong Belanak is the go-to beginner spot in South Lombok. The sandy bottom makes it a comfortable place to learn, free from reef hazards.
It’s ideal for first-timers practicing pop-ups and riding white water. Best on a mid tide with 3–5 ft swell, and surfable all year round.

Seger Beach
10 minutes east of Kuta | All Levels
Close to town and easy to access, Seger Beach is a favorite for both surf and sunset. A short paddle brings you to a left and right-hand reef break, with the right being the more well-known and consistent option.
Best during the rainy season on a mid to high tide, Seger sits over a shallow reef with sea urchins, so timing is key. It works best on small to mid-size swell.
Seger Right
A short, punchy wave with a quick takeoff. It can be playful and fun but tends to get shifty, with stronger currents when swell and tide are up.
Seger Left
More forgiving and mellow than the right, this wave is better suited to beginner and intermediate surfers. A popular training ground for local groms
Tanjung Aan
15 minutes east of Kuta | All Levels
One of the most beautiful bays in South Lombok, Tanjung Aan offers a long sandy beach and a fun A-frame peak breaking in the center of the bay.
On smaller days, it’s perfect for beginners and longboarders, offering long, smooth rides. As swell increases, the wave becomes more powerful with clean walls and stronger currents. Best during the rainy season on a mid to high tide.
Gerupuk Bay
20 minutes east of Kuta | Multiple breaks for all levels
A traditional fishing village with boat-only access to five different reef breaks, Gerupuk offers options for nearly every ability depending on swell and tide.
Inside
A long, mellow right-hander that works most of the year. It can be surfed on lower tide thanks to its grass-covered reef. Fun for beginners on small days and solid for experienced surfers when swell builds.
DonDon
An A-frame peak with equally fun left and right waves. Needs medium to large swell to properly break. Easy takeoff with long rides — approachable on moderate swell, more powerful when bigger.
Outside Right
An outer reef that picks up more swell. Steep takeoff, fast sections, and occasional barrels. Best on small to mid-size swell and not too low tide due to sharp reef.
Outside Left
A fast, hollow left over shallow reef. Wind-sensitive and best on small swell with mid to high tide.
Ekas Bay
30-minute boat ride from Awang | All Levels
Sheltered by surrounding hills, Ekas works year-round and is especially reliable in the dry season when other spots are wind-affected. Two main breaks cater to different abilities.
Ekas Inside
A softer, user-friendly wave with both left and right options. The right is steeper and shorter; the left is longer and more forgiving. Best on a 5–6 ft swell and low to mid tide — ideal for beginners and intermediates.
Ekas Outside
Picks up more swell and delivers a steeper, more powerful left-hander. On higher tide with overhead SE swell, it can offer quality barreling sections for confident surfers.
Are Guling
First bay west of Kuta | Intermediate – Advanced
Are Guling is a wide, scenic bay just west of Kuta, offering both a right and left-hand reef break. The waves break in the center of the bay and work best during the rainy season (October–April). You can paddle out or take a boat, but it’s important to understand the currents before heading in.
Are Guling Right
A consistent right-hander that handles both small and solid swell. Best on low to mid tide, it can deliver long, playful walls on smaller days and fast, barreling sections when the swell picks up.
Are Guling Left
Breaking on the left side of the bay, this wave is faster, hollower, and more technical. It works best on mid-size swell (around 4–5 ft) and mid to high tide. Shorter rides, sharper reef — and usually fewer crowds than the right.
Mawi
30 minutes west of Kuta | Intermediate – Advanced
Mawi is one of South Lombok’s most iconic and consistent surf spots. This powerful A-frame reef break works year-round but truly shines in the dry season with offshore east winds.
On smaller swells, the right-hander offers fun, rippable walls and occasional barrels, especially on lower tides. The left is more powerful and can handle larger swells (6–8 ft+), producing clean, open barrels when conditions align.
On small days and higher tides, Mawi can be approachable for improving surfers. When the swell jumps, it becomes a serious, current-heavy wave suited for experienced riders.
